Fun with filters (NSFW)

When I first got my Android a few years back, I got immersed in the filters available with the various photo apps. Sure, I had Instagram already and loved how its filters could enhance and embolden my photos, but here was a whole new slew of filters to play with. One of my favorite filters was the “Drama” filter in Google Photos app. Through contrast, lighting and tone, it made ordinary photos look like they came from glossy magazines.

Then one day, the Photos app was updated, and the Drama filter was gone. Not finding anything as good to replace it with, I searched on the message boards and learned the filter had been integrated into a new app called “Snapseed.” All was good in the world again.

Besides the Drama filter, Snapseed has a whole bunch of other cool filters – so many, it’s overwhelming and hard to know where to start or end. But one I’ve found that’s especially fun and interesting is the “Grunge” filter.

The Grunge filter applies an artistic patchwork pattern to the photo, giving it a rough grungy feeling. It’s also sort of a game of chance: when applying the filter somehow it decides what type to apply, but then there are countless variations that can be applied by swiping left or right. To make it further random, if you close the photo and reapply the filter again, it will choose a different filter to apply every time. So in some instances if I don’t like how the first filter looks, I’ll just backtrack and reapply to see what comes up next.

The original photos were a series taken in a hotel shower. It’s a continuous series so the lighting and everything is consistent through all of the photos, but the application of the Grunge filter changes every time.

Fun with filters!
